Winner of the SDF Thesis Competition 2026

The Swedish Demographic Association is pleased to announce RuoXuan Xu as the winner of the 2026 Thesis Competition for the thesis: “Why Are Fertility Intentions Declining Among Generation Z Women? Insights from the Chinese Context” (Lund University, June 2025).

The winning thesis investigates the underlying logic behind the declining fertility intentions among Chinese Gen-Z women. Using a multi-method qualitative approach that combines semi-structured interviews with online ethnography, the study reveals that these young women no longer unconditionally accept reproductive pressure from older generations, displaying instead a strong sense of reflexivity and individual agency. Key factors shaping their fertility intentions include a desire to concentrate resources on a single child, an emphasis on gender equality, and expectations regarding men’s willingness to participate in the domestic sphere. By challenging traditional gender roles, these women are actively contributing to the reconfiguration of family dynamics.

The jury noted that the thesis builds on an extensive review of existing literature and theoretical frameworks, presenting a sound analysis that significantly enhances our understanding of fertility intentions. The author manages to keep the reader thoroughly immersed throughout, exhibiting a clear structure, impeccable language, and an engaging narrative style. Overall, this is an excellent thesis built on a robust theoretical, methodological, and empirical foundation.

Congratulations, RouXuan!
